Thank You for Making CJA's 2010 Annual Event a Great Success
Celebrating our Victories in the Movement for Global JusticeCJA would like to thank our generous sponsors and supporters
who made our 2010 Annual Event, Celebrating our Victories in the
Movement for Global Justice, a resounding success. We feel very
fortunate to be part of such a committed and vibrant community of human
rights activists.
Over 250 CJA supporters, partners and clients joined us on April 28th in San Francisco to celebrate our successes in holding high-ranking perpetrators accountable and providing redress to survivors of human rights abuses.
The evening program provided powerful examples of some of the people who have made CJA’s work possible:
• Abukar Hassan Ahmed, a client of CJA and a former Amnesty
International Prisoner of Conscience welcomed everyone to CJA’s Annual
Event. He spoke about the importance of breaking the silence and
standing up for justice.
• Helen Mack Chang accepted the 2010
Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award on behalf of the Myrna Mack
Foundation. Helen Mack spoke about her important anti-impunity work and
her partnership with the CJA in the Guatemala Genocide Case.
•
Robert Vieth, partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP accepted the 2010
Partner in Justice Award. Robert Vieth and Cooley serves as pro-bono
co-counsel on two CJA cases brought on behalf of survivors of the brutal
Siad Barre regime in Somalia.
• Alberto Mora, former General
Counsel to the U.S. Navy, gave the keynote address. He spoke eloquently
about how the use of cruelty in the interrogation of detainees in the
so-called War on Terror is inconsistent with the rule of law and has had
the unintended consequence of making the U.S. more vulnerable from a
security perspective.
